Pirouette Class 1 comes up in the "Advanced Beginner" level search at FinisJhung.com. "Level 4: Intermediate Centerwork on Turns" comes up in the "Intermediate" search at FinisJhung.com. However, in my opinion it would be much better to do "Level 4: Intermediate Centerwork on Turns" first, before this Pirouette Class. Indeed, I think a beginner could practice the Level 4 exercises through Exercise 9 (or to the end if it didn't become too difficult), then switch to Pirouette Class 1 (which practices pirouettes en dehors) continuing here through at least Exercise 4 or 5. These exercises, slowly increase in speed and difficulty; however none are done on pointe.
The Introduction in "Pirouette Class 1" shows the mechanics behind a pirouette as illustrated with a spinning top. Exercise 1 is done very slowly turning in a promenade. Exercises 2 and 3 incorporate single pirouettes in slow, simple combinations. Exercises 4, 5, 6 and 7 show double pirouettes in increasingly challenging combinations; however a less experienced student can simply do singles.
In the 8th exercise the demonstrator pulls out all the stops, performing a triple pirouette at the beginning of the combination and a quadruple at the end. As an advanced beginner this really fast, energetic grand allegro type combination was the only one which I really couldn't do at all. An intermediate student will certainly find enough to challenge him/her on this video.
Although there are only 8 exercises on this program rather than the usual dozen or so, a lot of time is spent on each. Mr. Jhung explains the steps, as usual. Then you do them along with the demonstrator, as usual. Next the demonstration is shown in slow motion along with Mr. Jhung's commentary so that you can really see how the dancer's weight shifts during each part of the exercise. Then the exercise is shown a third time in slow motion with close-up focus on the dancer's legs and feet, along with yet more commentary. Finally the camera shows the demonstrator at full speed, again. This slow motion helps you to really see what your body should be doing.
Most of the more advanced exercises go across the floor twice in the same direction. The pair is repeated in the other direction only once at the end, full speed. In a living room you may need to switch to the other direction mid-exercise so it takes up less space. An easy modification to perform with the slow motion, this also gives you more practice on the other side.
