A chronicle of the 45 year collaboration between choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage compiled from interviews with their friends in the art world.
Filmmaker Elliot Caplan captures the brilliant, one-of-a-kind, decades-long partnership between choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage. Both men, individually, revolutionized their own arts. Together, they produced dance pieces which, in their use of groundbreaking artists and pioneering approach to aural and visual forms, were unprecedented since the days of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
Cage and Cunningham delve deeply into their philosophies of art, and their collaboration, with Caplan. In addition, their compatriots -- artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and dancers such as Rudolph Nureyev -- speak about their experiences working with these two geniuses.
Elliot Caplan is the official filmmaker for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and has recorded several of the Cunningham's dances. Cunningham's interest in documenting his pieces preceded Caplan's arrival, however, for he worked for over 20 years with filmmaker Charles Atlas.
Also appearing in the film are: Nam June Paik, Carolyn Brown, Viola Farber, Alvin Lucier, LaMonte Young and David Tudor.
